26 March – 7 June 2025

Focal Point Gallery, Southend

Rafał Zajko. Exhibition view ‘The Spin Off’. Focal Point Gallery, Southend. UK, 2025

Focal Point Gallery presents Rafał Zajko’s first UK institutional solo exhibition, The Spin Off. This theatrical installation explores themes of memory, repetition, cyclicality, and preservation through sculpture, ceramics, frescoes, and installation. Drawing on folklore, pop culture, and science fiction, Zajko reflects on the contemporary cultural phenomenon of ‘foreverism’ — the endless recycling and reinvention of the past.

Highlights include Funny Games, Zajko’s largest work to date, a modular, reconfigurable sculptural environment inspired by religious architecture and urban design. The exhibition also features A Star Is Born, an automated sculpture that uses light and smoke to embody nostalgia and progress, and a series of frescoes created with raw earth pigments, marking a new direction in Zajko’s practice.

The exhibition includes a performance by members of Contemporary Elders, Focal Point Gallery’s 60+ community group, and explores the relationship between ritual, repetition, and space. Supported by the Jerwood Foundation and Henry Moore Foundation, The Spin Off will travel to the Arsenal Gallery in Białystok, Poland, in Spring 2026 — Zajko’s hometown.
